Contemporary Dance Platform INSTINCT Summer Intensive 2016 with Iris van Peppen & Tim O’Donnell

August 15 – 19: INSTINCT Intensive with Iris van Peppen
August 20 – 24: Composing Together with Tim O’Donnell

The INSTINCT Intensive is a annual summer intensive with a focus on revealing instinctual movements  through research in somatic principles. Rather then focusing on ideas or composition, the composition will unfold through the embodiment of the research where all our senses come into play. The focus of the somatic principles will shift each year.

This year we will focus mainly on the head & neck release and spinal movement in attached trio’s and in space. We will also tune in to freeing the joints, particularly moving the bones away from the joints, opening up. When we are dancing in a 3 dimensional space with no front, how do we navigate in the space  and adapt our bodies constantly.

This intensive will be closed with an informal studio presentation.
For the INSTINCT INTENSIVE Iris van Peppen is looking for 9 or 12 open minded movers/dancers that:
– are well experienced in improvisation, instant composition
– are open for experimentation
– are injury free
– are available on the full schedule

Iris van Peppen is strongly influenced by her hearing disability as a young child.
In her work as a choreographer Iris is able to sense the quality of space and dancers and is able to create a sensorial world in her choreography. We currently live in a disembodied world, where we are actually asked not to use our body and its physical intelligence. We spend most of our days sitting on chairs, in front of computer or TV screens, bombarded by information and overwhelmed by thoughts. We are surrounded by noises, both literally and metaphorically and we get disconnected from our body and from our senses. The work of Iris aims to cut off all these ‘noises’, and go back to the ‘essence’, which is us and our bodies. By fine tuning to our senses and listening to our bodies, we reconnect to our ‘essence’, to who we are and to what really matters.

Composing Together with Tim O’Donnell (NYC)
A workshop in Contact Improvisation and CI into Composition.

From a place of deep physical listening we will focus on cultivating our responsiveness rather than our re-activeness, recognizing and then altering our known pathways, and composing through dialogue to create new layers and textures that deepen our dancing.
Through attentive and dynamic listening we will discover the balance in falling, redirecting, composing and soaring. It is this balance in listening that allows us to risk the unknown more fully in our dancing. With care and attention we will pose and explore questions from both contemporary dance as well as contact improvisation, working through exercises and scores that will hone our skills as movers, and thinkers.

Tim O’Donnell is a New York based dance artist who has been studying, teaching, and performing in both the United States and Europe. His exploration in dance and movement is strongly rooted in a deep physical listening and a sense of adventure. His classes range from the gentle and subtle to the acrobatic and fluidly athletic. He holds an MFA in Dance and has maintained a private practice in therapeutic bodywork and somatic movement since 1991. Currently he is on faculty at Movement Research and Arizona State University
