Lyric Opera of Chicago to hold dance auditions for Carmen by Georges Bizet on Monday, June 20, 2016 and Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on Monday, June 27, 2016

CARMEN

Lyric Opera of Chicago will be auditioning dancers with strong technique and significant stage experience for its upcoming production of the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet on Monday, June 20, 2016. This production will be staged by acclaimed director and choreographer Rob Ashford. Chris Bailey is associate choreographer, with Sarah O’Gleby as assistant choreographer and ballet mistress.

There will be an additional opportunity for three of the dancers cast from these auditions to perform in special gala performances featuring Act 2 of La traviata at the end of the season; this event will feature choreography by August Tye.

Carmen requires 6 men and 4 women (with no understudies). Rehearsals will begin Monday, January 16, 2017, with performances running from Saturday, February 11 through March 25, 2017.

Women should bring heels and wear clothing that shows the dance line (no fishnet tights, please). Men should possess excellent partnering skills and bring sneakers or character shoes as well as kneepads; we will be able to provide only a small number of kneepads for those who do not have them.

EUGENE ONEGIN

Lyric Opera of Chicago is auditioning dancers trained in contemporary ballet for its upcoming production of the opera Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on Monday, June 27, 2016. Choreographer for this production is Serge Bennathan, and August Tye is ballet mistress.

Eugene Onegin requires one male and one female dancer, plus one understudy for each. Rehearsals will begin Monday, January 30, 2017, with performances running from February 25 through March 20, 2017.

PLEASE NOTE: those interested in attending this audition should be prepared to present a short dance solo of their own devising, no longer than 2 minutes in length; if possible, please provide your own music track via CD or audio-playing device (iPod, smartphone, etc.)

Dancers should wear simple clothing that shows the dance line, and bring their choice of shoes (for women, heels are preferred but not required). Men should possess excellent partnering skills.

Each audition will be held at Lyric’s Civic Opera House, entrance at 40 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago IL 60606.

Schedules for both Monday, June 20 and June 27 are as follows:

9:00am – Check-in: must arrive by 9:30am

10:00am – *Audition begins: should conclude no later than 5:00pm

*NOTE: There will be no warm-up class for the Carmen audition on June 20; dancers should arrive already warmed-up and ready to dance. There WILL be a ballet class for the Eugene Onegin audition on June 27.

The deadline to register for both auditions is Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at 5:00pm CDT

Please be prepared to show a government-issued photo identification card to gain access to the auditions. All applicants must have valid eligibility to work in the United States. Lyric Opera will not apply for working permits for foreign dancers.
