Urgent – Arts for Action requires versatile performers for outdoor performances

Open Call: dancers, physical theatre performers, actors, comics, writers, directors, choreographers, musicians, digital-visual artists with an interest in creating socially relevant or political work.

For Arts for Action Collective Workshop audition on Saturday 7th May 2014, 12.00 – 18.00 St Johns Church Hall, 5 Roman Road, Bethnal Green, E2 9PA with Arts for Action Director Melissa Eveleigh and Associate Directors Adam Mcguigan and David Glass.

Arts for Action requires versatile performers for outdoor performances 13th -15th May. Short dance, satire, invisible theatre, visual provocations will form part of the weekend long Artists Protest Against War, ‘Are we Awake?’ Performers will be filmed in different spaces across London and be part of a large performance rally on Trafalgar square.

This will be of particular interest to performers and creatives keen to develop their political artistic voice.

Rehearsal/workshop schedule: as follows:

Saturday 7th May 12.00 – 18.00: Workshop Audition
Sunday 8th May: Rolling day: Mask and Puppet workshop: developing visual political expression
Monday 9th May 14.00 – 17.00 Choreographing political action: MPs and chorus of displaced
Tuesday 10th May 12.00 – 16.00 Forum theatre, political satire and improvisation workshop
Thursday 12th May 12.00 – 18.00 Combining forms and content: developing Acts of Protest
Friday 13th May 15.00 – 16.00 Trafalgar Sq adventure and delivering a present to Number 10 Downing Street
Saturday 14th May 12.00 – 18.00 Things happen around London
Sunday 15th May 15.00 Artist Protest Against War on Trafalgar Square

The creative process is performative – testing ideas with our audience, from the studio to the street

NB: Not all dates are compulsory – performers required for minimum of 2 days total.

Candidates must either have a good level of dance and performance experience, or experience collaborating on or creating political artistic work. Experience of devising work essential, willingness to perform outdoors and engage with the public directly is important. Voice and music skills an advantage but not essential.

This professional development opportunity is suitable for:

-Recent dance and physical theatre graduates
-Experienced dancers and physical theatre performers who are currently available
-Any performers who wish to create socio-political work in non-traditional spaces.
-Creatives with an interest in making a statement about the UK’s involvement in the War on Terror.

Longer term opportunity: Arts for Action requires a group of motivated performers and creatives to form part of the Arts for Action collective: a network who together workshop, train, devise, support each other’s ideas and growth, showcase and produce extraordinary work.
