Time line/location:

Auditions will be held September 14-16 in New York and
October 4-5 2018 in Berlin.

Ongoing research/workshop sessions will be October 6-28 2018 and Spring 2019 in Berlin followed by touring engagements for Spring/Summer 2019, Fall 2019 and possible touring engagements in 2020.

About: Rolling 2019

Rolling takes on the challenge to assemble around 250 films in a roughly ninety-minute play. Following the success of Laub‘s Fassbinder, Faust and the Animists, that premiered in 2017 as an adaptation of Fassbinder’s film Beware of a Holy Whore, the current project Rolling will continue the intertwining of film and theater and will rethink this disposition in an even more challenging set-up. Rather than referring to a single film script and its possible adaptation on stage, Rolling deals with an accumulation of scenes and quotes from about 250 films, which will lead to a total immersion into the world of film. Staged in a radical, highly rhythmic change of geographical and temporal references and genres, works from the early twentieth century to the present interact in a mutual relationship. Classic movies, arthouse films, B-movies and milestones in film history stand in line with blockbusters, popular culture stands alongside with high culture, European and American cinema alternates with that of African and Asian productions. But it is not only a homage to film, that is negotiated as an event on stage. The accumulation and defragmentation of movie scenes opens up a new perspective by creating alternative narratives and readings. What starts as a playful laboratory becomes a powerful tool to reflect on the contemporary environment that we live in today. In this carefully orchestrated durational sample of movies, the narrations, choreographies, dances, or the characters become indistinguishable at times – a set-up that might be familiar to those who have seen Fassbinder, Faust and the Animists. Showcasing more than 250 films (this time without the use of a single film clip) in ninety minutes follows the tremendous impact movies had on shaping Laub‘s work practice. The appropriation of a significant amount of cinematic quotations, their ecstatic sampling and their transfer into the authenticity of the theatrical performance is therefore, above all, a declaration of love to cinema.

Director / Choreographer Michael Laub has been referred to as a pioneer of Postdramatic Theatre. In 1981, he founded Remote Control Productions, emerging from performance group Maniac Productions, presenting amongst others “Rough” 1994, “Planet Lulu” 1997, “Pigg In Hell” 2000, “Total Masala Slammer” 2001 and “The H.C. Andersen Project” 2003. His pieces oscillate between realism and fiction, making use of authenticity and the artificial simultaneously. His performances include various forms and are often influenced by film and television. Since 2002, he has been working on the “Portrait Series”, an attempt at adapting portraiture to the stage. Previous showings of this series include “Portraits 360 Sek” at the Hamburg Schauspielhaus 2002, “Portrait Series: Alone/ Gregoire” with Astrid Endruweit and Greg Zuccolo 2004, “The Biography Remix” with Marina Abramovic 2004, “Portrait Series Berlin: Professional and Non-Professional Dancers” 2007, “Portrait Series Istanbul: Aspiring Actresses and Actresses” 2010, “Burgportraits” Burgtheater Vienna 2011 and “Portrait Series Battambang: Scavengers, Models and a Security Guard”, HAU Hebbel am Ufer as part of “Staging Cambodia” in 2014. Early in 2016, Laub premiered a new live solo “Asutorito Endurowaito“ with Astrid Endruweit” at HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, as well as a new ten-channel video installation entitled “Dance Portraits Cambodia” at the 21er Haus in Vienna presented by ImPulsTanz Festival and the Weltmuseum. Following the world premier of “Fassbinder, Faust and the Animists” at HAU Hebbel am Ufer in 2017, the piece opened the ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna.
