Director and Choreographer Lanre Malaolu is Searching for Black Male Dancers/Physical Performers for His Next Film.
Director and choreographer Lanre Malaolu is making a hybrid documentary-movement film called VOICELESS (Supported & commissioned by the BFI).
VOICELESS explores what it means to be a young working-class black man growing up in a London council estate. It is centred on two boys who live in an area which has high levels of crime (of which they are not involved in) and explores the negative stigma attached to growing up in a council estate. The film also explores how some of these young men feel like they don’t have a place or voice in wider society outside of their estates.
Layered into the narrative and inter-cut seamlessly with the interviews, there will be dance/movement sequences that explore the boys’ sense of detachment from society along with other themes routed from the interviews.
Lanre is looking for **black male** actors (with strong movement experience)/dancers with a background in physical theatre and/or hip-hop, contemporary and experimental dance styles to feature heavily in the project. It’s essential that performers are not afraid to push themselves to a bold and visceral place for this project, and are confident with partner work (experience in devising movement is a bonus).
Rehearsal/shooting dates to be confirmed but will span from December – January.
This is a paid engagement.
Lanre’s previous film work includes FIGURE a multi-award winning dance film, which has been selected and screened at film festivals around the world including, Zanzibar, Texas, Toronto, Vancouver and the BAFTA qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival.
