Dunja Jocić is a choreographer and director, leading Stichting Dunja Jocić, a contemporary dance company based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her work is recognized for its strong physicality and cinematic quality, exploring themes of perception and humanity’s relationship with technology, mortality, and transformation. Drawing from a diverse background in rhythmic gymnastics, film, and ballet, Jocić’s choreography has a distinctive voice that bridges movement and narrative. Working across different mediums—including film, theatre, and opera—she has collaborated with prominent artists and companies and created award-winning dance films like Mirroring and Bird. Her choreographic works have been commissioned by Gauthier Dance, Spellbound Contemporary Ballet, Stadtstheater Braunschweig, Dance Company Osnabrück, and Hessisches Staatsballett.

FOLK:
In Folk, a vibrant club night slowly transforms into an intoxicating ritual. The dance floor becomes an altar, and the night turns into a chain of ceremonies in which uniformity takes the upper hand. As the atmosphere shifts, so does the dynamic: the group forms a shared identity that constantly changes, unstable and elusive, in which individuals are either absorbed or cast out. The dancers take the audience on a physical and immersive journey in which collective behavior unfolds according to ever-changing logics. We are drawn into increasingly strange rituals and our perceptions of what we see and feel are continuously overturned. The performance makes tangible how confronting, seductive, and unsettling collective forces can be. The work draws inspiration from the rich folk traditions of former Yugoslavia and from the turbulent 1990s, when ideological shifts from socialism to nationalism deeply affected daily life and personal identity. In Folk, Jocić channels the raw energy of Balkan music and dance to create new rituals: on the edge of tradition, trance, and transformation, with echoes of social upheaval.
