in³ INITIATE x Jiří Pokorný

Workshop for pre-professional and professional dancers and physical artists to explore choreographic and improvisational tools while mastering Jirí Pokorný’s movement approach — Nov 17–28, 2025; join for 1 or 2 weeks, intensive with Jiri from 9am–1:30pm and open studio until 5pm.

We’re excited to launch in³ (IN CUBE), a platform for professional development and international artistic exchange with our INITIATE intensives. INITIATE is designed to accelerate mastery and centre flow. INITIATE empowers artists to network and learn from master teachers.

Held in Boorloo (also known as Perth), Western Australia, this year’s INITIATE brings internationally acclaimed Czech choreographer Jiří Pokorný to Australia for a rare opportunity designed specifically for dance and performance-making artists. Learn, connect and create with fellow artists and make new collaborative networks across countries and artistic disciplines.

About Jiří Pokorný: Jiří has performed and created at the highest international level – from dancing with Nederlands Dans Theater and Kidd Pivot to choreographing for Ballet BC, NDT2, and National Theatre Prague. He’s collaborated with legendary artists including Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Mats Ek, Paul Lightfoot & Sol León, and teaches at world-class institutions like Royal Conservatory (The Hague), Juilliard School, and NDT Summer Intensive.

Workshop Structure:
• initiate 1 (November 17-21): Transferable choreographic and improvisational tools for various body-based disciplines
• initiate 2 (November 24-28): Fast-paced exploration of Jiří’s movement approach and repertoire

• Attend one or both weeks based on your interests and availability

Daily Schedule:
• 9-9:30am: Studio open for warm-up
• 9:30-11am: Class
• 11:30-1:30pm: Deep-dive sessions
• 2pm onwards: Open studio access until 5pm where you can practice, share ideas and connect with other participants

Note: 9:30-1:30pm teaching schedule is fluid and subject to Jiří’s flow with students

Organiser’s note
“I first met Jiří at a 2022 Crystal Pite workshop and he blew me away with his ability to hold space for all levels in a class that ranged from younger pre-professionals, to more seasoned independent dancers, to a 50-60 year old ex-professional dancer from regional WA. I witnessed first-hand that he truly is a master teacher. He has a true passion for teaching that is rare in someone who is also such a luminary choreographer.

This will be a great introduction to Jiří practice at a lower cost to those living closer to Australia compared to travelling to Europe. It will be a great chance to connect to other pre-professional students and professional artists from around the world, and have a sense of what it might be to work, live and collaborate in Australia. ”

Jiri’s note on working in an interdisciplinary space
“…they can bring something in from their own knowledge and their own education and maybe fuse their own practice that they already know together with the new practice of a movement, something that I can facilitate and then they can maybe see how these two things may merge together.”

Our Vision: Jiri and the in³ organising team are designing this workshop to hold space for an exceptional interdisciplinary experience that serves not only the contemporary dance community but performance-making artists with a body-based background interested in what they can learn from contemporary dance. We create a learning environment designed to both accelerate mastery in Jiri’s movement approach and engage with his repertoire (week 1), but also a unique opportunity that holds space to learn choreographic and improvisational tools from a master choreographer who will meet artists where they are at in their practice, and create a space that is open to learning from an exposure to the diverse practices of peers (week 2).

This Opportunity is Ideal For:
Dance artists:
• Contemporary dancers interested in developing their unique artistic voice
• Artists wanting to explore a current take on European contemporary lineages (William Forsythe, Crystal Pite, Jiří Kylián, Paul Lightfoot & Sol León) with an incredible master teacher
• Dancers interested in interdisciplinary approaches and choreographic development

Theatre and interdisciplinary performance students and graduates:
• Performance-makers with a strong physical foundation (Suzuki, Viewpoints, physical theatre, etc.)
• Performance-makers seeking new creative tools, interested in integrating the latest in contemporary dance
