WORKSHOP with JOSEPH SIMON
The Movement Re|Hubs series is a curated program designed to inspire movers, dancers and practitioners to exchange practices, experiment and learn from national and internationals professionals in the field willing to share and connect through their practice.
La Cap, provides participants the opportunity both to reside on-site and have access to the studio space, allowing these gatherings to foster cross-disciplinary exchange and nurture practices in dialogue and co-habitation with national and international mentors.
“Ballet Fantasies”
Working with movement languages as “sticky feet”, “house ballet” and work-titles as “ballet fantasies”, Joseph experiments with alternative forms of ballet, which break hierarchies and invite for groove, playfulness and individuality mixing breaking, house dance and dance hall.
During the workshop, ballet technique will be playfully deconstructed and reconstructed on multiple levels, blending its rigor and precision with groove, diverse musicalities, and an improvisational mindset inspired by jazz, house music and hip hop culture.
The practice will involve both structured movement patterns and exercises, as well as improvisation and playful creation.
Familiarity with ballet training is required to participate.
Joseph Simon (France, 1989) graduated from ArtEZ School of Dance, Arnhem in 2014. His work explores the hybridity between classical ballet and urban dance forms, particularly House dance and Hip-hop, which he actively practices. Positioned at the intersection of academic dance, House and contemporary practice, his work examines how ballet encounters subcultural movements based on community, self-empowerment, and liberation. He teaches regularly at Codarts Circus Arts University, Rotterdam and across Europe. He has been resident choreographer at Dansateliers Rotterdam, and he continues collaborating as a performer with artists such as Erik Kaiel, Hooman Sharifi, Alida Dors, Jochen Heckmann, Jean-Guillaume Weis, Jonas Frey Dalton Jansen, Tu Hoang, and Oona Doherty.
