DeNada Dance Theatre Seeks 1 Female and 4 Male Dancers

DeNada Dance Theatre (choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra) seeks one female and four male dancers with excellent contemporary and classical technique and unique personalities for the creation and UK national tour of Mariposa: a Transgender Tragedy Inspired by Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, the company’s new full length narrative production. We are seeking highly skilled, open minded and experienced performers, encouraging culturally diverse applications

Mariposa will transport Puccini’s iconic libretto to a Caribbean island, where a male sex worker falls in love for an American sailor, for whom he’ll be asked to sacrifice his gender. A dark tragicomedy full of magic realism and drama, the production will be created in Birmingham, UK, throughout September 2019, with further production and touring in spring/autumn 2020.

We are seeking:

Male Dancer (1 professional contract)

Character portrayed: young Caribbean male

We are seeking a male dancer with knowledge/experience of pointe work, who has excellent contemporary/classical technique, great partnering skills, gravitas, presence and is creative and open to experimentation. The candidate will have experience in character work. A minimum of three years’ professional experience is required.

Male Dancer (Professional contract)

Character portrayed: non-Caribbean young male

Dancer with excellent contemporary/classical technique, with good classical partnering/partnering pointe skills, stage presence, creativity and experience in narrative work. A minimum of three years experience is necessary.

Male Dancers (2 professional contracts, 1 paid apprentice) – To portray Caribbean characters of different ages and gender identities

Dancers of excellent contemporary and classical technique, stage presence and with experience in character work, who are creative and open to experimentation. Experience in drag, Afro-Caribbean dance dance a bonus.

Professional contracts: a minimum of three years professional experience required.
Apprentice contract: we welcome applications from recent graduates or students in final year of vocational training.

Female Dancer (1 professional contract) – Characters portrayed of no specific background.

Dancer with experience in pointe work, with a good understanding of contemporary technique, partnering, stage presence, experience in character work and is creative and open to experimentation. A minimum of three years professional experience required.

Contract Dates:

Creation: Sept 2- Oct 2, 2019, DanceXchange, Birmingham

Production: March 16-28, 2020, DanceXchange, Birmingham

Spring tour: Throughout April 2020

Autumn Tour: Throughout Sept- Oct 2020

An audition, by invitation only, will take place in central London on July 30 2019.
