National Ballet of Portugal is Looking for a New Artistic Director

OPART, E.P.E. hereby announces the international call for applications for the selection of a new Artistic Director for the Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB – the National Ballet of Portugal), considering the end of the mandate of the current Artistic Director on 31 August this year. The application period runs from 22 March to 22 April.

The mandate and the corresponding employment contract on an exclusive service commission basis will run for four years (September 2024 – August 2028) and may be renewed up to two times for equal periods.

The selection panel, appointed by the Minister of Culture, is made up of Conceição Amaral (Chair of the Board of Directors of OPART, E.P.E.), chair of the selection panel; Rui Morais (Member of the Board of Directors of OPART, E.P.E.); Mark Deputter (Administrator and Artistic Director of the Culturgest Foundation); Olga Roriz (Choreographer and Director of the Olga Roriz Dance Company); and Ted Brandsen (Choreographer and Artistic Director of the Dutch National Ballet).

Contracting entity: OPART – Organismo de Produção Artística, E.P.E – (hereinafter referred to as OPART) the managing body of Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (TNSC – the Sao Carlos National Theatre), Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB – the National Ballet of Portugal) and Estúdios Victor Córdon (EVC) , enjoys autonomy with regard to management, budget and assets.

Position to be filled: Artistic Direction of the CNB – the National Ballet of Portugal

Type of selection procedure: International call for applications

Term of office: 2 September 2024 to 31 August 2028

Requirements:

After the closing date, up to five candidates will be selected for the personal interview stage. Factors considered fundamental for the position include knowledge of the artistic field and the performing arts sector, in particular expertise in national and international networks for dissemination and creation; professional experience appropriate to the role; a systemic and holistic vision of the sector and management; leadership; institutional cooperation; communication and transparency; valuing diversity; and innovation. Applications must include a detailed curriculum vitae with evidence of academic qualifications and relevant professional experience, up to three letters of recommendation, and a letter of motivation and programme presentation for the position. Overall, it is essential that each application is clear in its proposal and reflects the mission, values, themes and programme interests that are relevant to the CNB’s role in the performing arts scene in Portugal and Europe; establishes a relationship with national audiences and territories; integrates a forward-looking exercise of the CNB’s activity; and makes a critical assessment of the activities developed and results obtained by the CNB in recent years.
