Seeking contemporary dancers with strong classical ballet technique for large scale ice skating specatuclar
Balbir Singh is creating a new work to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of John Curry, the 1976 GB Olympic Gold Medalist for ice skating. John Curry went on to pioneer creating ballet on ice, performing across the globe with his company. He worked with many dance choreographers including Robert Cohan, Twyla Tharp, Agnes De Mille, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Peter Martins and Peter Heubi.
The performance is a collaboration with skaters Mark Hanretty and Yebin Mok, with an international cast of skaters featuring ITV Dancing on Ice champions Vanessa Bauer and Nina Ulanova amongst others. The project has been endorsed by John Curry’s family and Olympic Gold Medallists Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean and Robin Cousins.
No ice skating skills necessary. The performances will take place on ice rinks in Billingham (August 16th and 17th and Sheffield August 20th), with a rehearsal period from 5th August onwards in Billingham, Teeside.
Work that will feature includes Don Quixote, Scheherazade, L’apres midi d’un faune, Carmen and Spartacus amongst new work being created.
This is a collaboration between Billingham International Folk Festival with Arts Council England funding and Balbir Singh Dance Company.
This work is part of the Sport Art strand of Balbir Singh’s creative vision with previous works including: swimming pool spectacular Synchronised in 2012, a re-interpretation of Swan Lake on ice with Peacock Lake, Champion of the Flatlands featuring a BMX Euro champion and The Strategists about the world of female rugby.
Balbir Singh Dance Company is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, based at Yorkshire Dance, Leeds.
